75 Years Ago-September 1, 1944
Miss Lilia Askdal, daughter of Mrs. S.M.S. Askdal, was married to Edwin R. Larson of Albert Lea on August 16, at the home of the bride’s mother. Personals Mr. and Mrs. John Myhre received word from their son, Pvt. Raymond Myhre, that he had been awarded the Purple Heart Medal for wounds received in action in France on July 7th. He is now in a hospital in England. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Gillund are the parents of a boy born on Monday, August 24. Mr. and Mrs. Joe Bretschneider are the parents of a boy born on Monday, August 28.
Pvt. and Mrs. Rollie Byrne are the parents of a girl born August 16th. They have named her Roberta Johana. Country News-Taunton The infant son of Mr. and Mrs. John Kloos, Jr. was baptized on Sunday. He was given the name LeRoy Harold. Joe Szarzynski was one of the Boy Rangers who left Monday on a camping trip for a few days at Big Stone Lake.
50 Years Ago-September 4, 1969
1,018 Students Begin School
Total enrollment at Minneota’s two Schools - St. Edward’s and the Minneota public - was higher at the start of this year’s term than last year on the opening day. Total enrollment at the parochial school was 198 at the start of the 1969-70 term, whereas last year it was 195. Enrollment at the public school was 820 at the beginning of the term this year while last year it was 738.
Best Dairy Cow
Greg Hennen, 16-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Orville Hennen, Ghent, won an over-all grand championship at the recent county fair for his Holstein cow. He took the cow to the Minnesota State Fair on Friday.
Local 4-Hers Win State Fair Awards
Anne DeCock, Ghent, was selected for the third Court of Honor in the final 4-H dress revue at the Minnesota State Fair. Kris Hennen exhibited the first place overall grade Brown Swiss animal, a junior yearling, and received a bell from the State Brown Swiss Breeders’ association.
Veteran Member Leaves M-G-T Board
H.J. Van Keulen, who has held a position on the Minneota, Ghent, and Taunton Co-operative Oil Co. continuously for the past 27 years resigned from that board effective August 30th. Donald Boerboom has been appointed to fill the unexpired term of Van Keulen. Both Boerboom and Van Keulen are from the Ghent area.
4-Hers Competing in Region Show
Six 4-Hers from Lyon County will be competing with other area club members in the regional horse show at Granite Falls this week. Club members from this part of Lyon County who will compete are Kris Hennen, Renee Larson and Roberta Larson, all with Minneota addresses.

Gislason Hardware changing hardware line
Dick Sletten, a representative of Ace Hardware, is arranging the paint display at Gislason Hardware. The local hardware store recently changed their brand of merchandise from Hardware Hank to Ace Hardware.
New Staff at School District #414
New at school are: Orlyn Wiemers, Superintendent; Jeanette Sharp, District Business Office; Tamela Timko, Fifth Grade teacher; Sonya Olevson, High School Social Studies; Roberta Josephson, LD; Robin Traen, Elementary Special Needs Aide; Steve Musser, High School Physical Education/Health; Margrit Rabaey, Junior High Science; Lori Fisher, ECFE; and Ryan Syverson, Sixth Grade teacher.
Minneota Jaycees Punt, Pass and Kick Contest
The local Jaycees organization held it’s yearly Punt, Pass and Kick competition at K. P. Kompelien Athletic Field last Thursday evening. First place winners in the competition were: eight year old category, Todd Traen; nine year, Joshua Blegen; ten year, Joshua Swedzinski; eleven year, Nathan Opdahl; twelve year, Steven Schreiber; thirteen year, Justin Anderson. All first place winners will go on to the Regional competition,which will be held in Pipestone in September.
