75 Years Ago-Oct. 2, 1942
O. H. Thomas retires
Thirty-nine years of bossing a section crew have ended in a retirement and the comfort of a warm hearth for Oscar H. Thomas, who laid down his lunch-pail and pick-axe in August. Mr. Thomas started working for the Northwestern R. R. when he was a young man, and has been stationed at Minneota for 16 years. His place on the crew was taken by Joseph Bauer of Turton, S.D. who is now foreman. Mr. and Mrs. Bauer are living in the apartments in the Carl Kjorness home.
Big Day in Minneota
Friday, October 16, will be a big day in Minneota. It’s the day of the Community Junk Rally, and also the date of the Minneota high school homecoming game with Tyler. Every farmer and his family may have free tickets to the football game as guests of the Minneota Businessmen’s association, the sponsor of the junk rally, in a determined effort to clear every farm and home in this area of usable scrap metal for the munitions metal.
50 Years Ago-Oct. 5, 1967
One of the four senior class candidate girls will be named queen of homecoming activities when the student body of the Minneota high school holds its traditional rally this (Thursday) evening. The pepfest will take place in the school auditorium at 7:30 p.m. and the crowning of the queen will take place at that time, instead of between halves of the game Friday, as has been the custom. The girls are: Susan Afdem, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Afdem; Carol VanHecke, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Maurice VanHecke; Judy Boerboom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Boerboom; and Shirley Stoks, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Stoks. Fraser Geiwitz, president of the student council, will act as master of ceremonies.
Airmen serving in Vietnam
Airman Second Class Bennet J. Boerboom, son of Mr. and Mrs. John A. Boerboom of Ghent, is on duty at Tan Son Nhut AB, Vietnam. Airman Boerboom, a jet engine mechanic, is a member of the Pacific Air Forces. Before his arrival in southeast Asia he was assigned to Mountain Home AFB, Idaho. The airman is a graduate of Central Catholic high school, Marshall. Airman Second Class Roger S. Przybus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Przybus of Ghent, is on duty at Da Nang AB,Vietnam. Airman Przybus, a still photographer, is a member of the Aerospace Audio-Visual Service in support of the Pacific air forces. Before his arrival in Vietnam, he was assigned at Kessler AFB, Miss. The airman is a 1965 graduate of Lynd public high school.

Getting to know Minneota
Brett, Cindy and Adam Dorrance are living at the parental Don Sanow home here in Minneota until Carrie is finished with his Air Force assignment on Guam. The boys are enrolled in Minneota Public school and Cindy is currently helping her Dad in his construction business.
Earn awards at Senior Project Council
Andy Traen earned a third place ribbon in the “Never Before Tried Idea” contest staged by the Senior Nutrition Services.
Cross Country participants
Peter Janiszeski and Nathan Canton are participating in the cross country program in Canby. The youths enjoy the sport of running, and have found the activity to be a good test for them. They encourage other students to get involved in the sport next year and are already finding success for themselves in the competitions that have been held.
Volleyball team brings home a trophy
The high school volleyball team won third place in the Granite Falls Tournament this past Saturday.
Movies playing at the Canby Theater are: Unforgiven with Clint Eastwood and Morgan Freeman, and Housesitter with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn.
