Relay for Life kick-off soon!
Betsy Jo Kack of Minneota knows the importance of getting involved with the Relay for Life. After all, she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004 and again in 2008, has had numerous family members stricken with cancer, and has spent the past 25 years working to raise money for the American Cancer Society.
The Relay for Life of Lyon County will hold a kick-off event on Thursday, Feb. 7 at the Wooden Nickel in Marshall.
The kick-off, which begins at 5:30 p.m., is being held for those current teams, any new teams, or anyone who is planning to participate in the Relay for Life in 2019.
“It will be a come-and-go event, allowing you to sign up for Relay for Life, ask questions, and see the changes for this year’s Relay for Life,” said Tara Brand, Lyon County Relay for Life Publicity Chair.
This is the first time in a quarter of a century that Kack won’t be involved with the Lyon County Relay for Life leadership planning team.
Her daughter, Jordyn, is graduating from Marshall High School this spring, but Kack is still participating and captaining one of the fundraising teams (Jimmy’s J Crew/Kack Attack) that currently is leading all teams in the amount raised so far.
The 2019 Relay for Life of Lyon County event will be held from 5-10:30 p.m. on June 21 at the Red Baron Arena in Marshall.
Relay for Life is an annual signature fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. It is staffed and coordinated by volunteers who combine their commitments with participants and supporters to help save lives from cancer.
Kack initially joined the Luminaria Committee before getting more and more involved with Relay for Life.
Over the years, she also helped with logistics, mission promotion and as event chair for many years. And she twice served a two-year term on the ACS Minnesota State Leadership Board.
The Jimmy’s J Crew/Kack Attack team she is with has so far raised $2,160 with a goal of $10,000.
“Our team sticks with the $10,000 goal, but we have exceeded that the last few years,” said Kack, a Pre-Planning Counselor with Rehkamp-Horvath Funeral Home.
“Most people donate through two big fundraisers that our team does each year; ‘Wing and Pizza Night’ at KB’s (in Ghent) in late winter/early spring, and ‘Golf Fun Night’ in the early summer.”
Supporters can donate (checks payable to ACS) to any of Kack’s team members or donate online. Luminaria bags can also be purchased by any team member for $10 to honor a loved one lost, someone currently battling cancer, anyone who has overcome cancer, or to a caregiver of someone with cancer.
Visit the Relay for Life of Lyon County website to view all the teams or to donate.
