Minnesota Governor's Deer Hunting Opener features blaze orange selfie and more
Show off your outdoor skills, listen to informational seminars, and visit the vendor booths during the Minnesota Governor's Deer Hunting Opener Celebration Thursday, November 1, at Grand Casino Hinckley.
The celebration runs from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m
"Our state's hunting traditions are worth celebrating and this event is a great chance to do just that," said James Burnham, hunter and angler recruitment, retention and reactivation coordinator with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
"Spending time with other hunters and wearing some blaze orange helps build up the excitement for the season we all feel this time of year."
The celebration features a variety of deer hunting-related booths and activities, and a white-tailed deer butchering demonstration by professional butcher Bill Hesselgrave. Among the other on-site activities will be air rifle range from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, a laser shooting range arranged by the DNR Enforcement.
The Minnesota Official Measurers also will be on site scoring antlers so bring your trophy down to have it officially scored and entered into the records. In addition, attendees can view the DNR and Turn-In-Poachers 30-foot Wall of Shame, an exhibit of impressive, yet illegally taken, animals.
The DNR will also have a replica of the world record eight-point whitetail antlers on site that came from an illegally harvested deer in Goodhue County in 2009.
At 6 p.m., visitors, citizens and guests are invited to wear their blaze orange and gather in the Ballroom to take part in a Sea of Blaze Orange/Pink photo with fellow outdoor enthusiasts.
Those who purchased a ticket for the Welcome to Deer Camp Celebration can also enjoy raffles, auctions, a cash bar and gourmet hors d'oeuvres. Celebration tickets are $50 tickets and can purchased locally at Hinckley area Northview Bank locations (Hinckley, Sandstone, Finlayson, Askov, Kerrick, Willow River) or found online along with more event information at www.mngovernorsdeeropener.com.
A very limited number of tickets may be available at the door. As an added incentive, each ticket purchased is entered into the door prize drawings for a lifetime deer hunting license or lifetime membership to the Minnesota Deer Hunter's Association.
