Abby Hennen stole the ball and headed up court with YME's Meeghen Dahlager trailing.

Girls 20-0 run leads to big win

In the first game of the year Coach Chad Johnston tried out a press the team hadn’t practiced at all.
Now, their third game, the press has become “an identity” of the Viking girls.
Tuesday night they used it to go on a 20-0 run to start the game that led to a 72-35 win over Yellow Medicine East.
“The press is looking good,” said Coach Johnston.
“It didn’t hurt to have six girls in double figures, either,” chimed in Assistant Coach Dale Kockelman.
Indeed. The six were Lizzy Gillingham with 13; Abby Hennen with 12; Morgan Kockelman with 10; Lydia Sussner with 14; Morgan Hennen with 10 and Natalee Rolbiecki with 10.
“We have lots of girls scoring — a lot off turnovers,” the coach said.
After Minneota went on that incredible 20-0 start, the game slowed down a bit. A bucket by Mackenzie Dyrdahl was the first score for The Sting and that opened the scoring a bit for YME.
In fact, they were even the rest of the half, scoring 21 points apiece for a 41-21 halftime margin.
“We got a little conservative,” the coach said.
The Vikings picked up the pace again in the second half and kept stretching their lead.
He said Abby Hennen’s aggresive style of play helped set up opportunties for the Vikings.
They threw in eight three-pointers to just one for YME.
“In the second half we came out of it,” the coach said.
“Overall we are very, very happy with this game.
Gillingham, who came into the season with a sprained ankle suffered in the state volleyball tournament, has been struggling to get back in the swing.
She was doing it, too, with 13 points and a team-leading eight rebounds.
Then on a drive to the basket she “tweaked her ankle a bit,” said Coach Johnston.
“Here speed has been affected,” said the coach.
Now, after re-injuring it, Coach Johnston said, “It make take a little time to get her back into the swing of things.”
