Morgan Hennen drove into the lane against Canby Thursday night.

Girls rollin' along; top Canby

"Not bad, not bad at all," smiled Coach Chad Johnston.

A 69-44 win over Canby Thursday night, Minneota's 18th of the year with four losses, told the coach his team is, "Playing well at the right time of year."

Lydia Sussner led the way as she controlled underneath the basket, scoring 22 points with nine rebounds. She got plenty of help from Lizzy Gillingham and her 15 points and nine rebounds; Abby Hennen's 13 points and 10 rebounds and Morgan Hennen's nine points and six rebounds.

Both teams were sluggish at the start, but eventually the Vikings forged a 21-11 lead with 7:25 to go in the first half, then built it to a 41-23 halftime bulge.

Sussner's first shot of the game was blocked by Norah King, but that only seemed to fire her up. She blocked King's first attempt as well — then controlled the center the rest of the way, scoring 18 first-half points.

"I wondered when King made that block if that was going to be the way she'd play, but Lydia answered her and that was the end of it," said Coach Johnston.

King got into foul trouble and ended with just two points.

If Minneota had anything to contend with it was the three-point shooting Canby used, sinking four in the first half and two more in the second half.

Morgan Cleveland was the recipient of the three-point shotsand she led Canby with 10 points. Hannah Jelen and Kaylee Leppke each scored eight points for the Lancers.

What the coaching staff saw Thursday night was a team using all it's tools to accomplish the task. Morgan Hennen was quick to get the ball inside to Sussner — and she often spied Gillingham at the basket.

Sussner had seven steals, many of which started fast breaks — and Gillingham added four more as the Vikings kept the offensive pressure on Canby as they pushed the ball up the court. And they pressed the Lancers into 26 turnovers while committing just 13  themselves.

"We made them work hard," said Coach Johnston. "And we did a lot of good things," he added.

Off the bench, Abby Rost provided four points and grabbed four rebounds and Natalee Rolbiecki scored three with three rebounds.

With his team playing well and heading into the home stretch of the regular season, Johnston's squad will take their show on the road on Saturday.

They play at Maranatha Academy in the Twin Cities with the JV beginning at 1 p.m. and the varsity to follow.

"And they are going into that game without a lot of pressure. "We just want to go there and be competitive," said the coach. Maranatha is always a challenge and Minneota expects that again.

But either way, win or lose, the competition is just what the Minneota girls need this time of year.
