Alex Pohlen greeted by Coach Keven Larson after the home run.

Homer, solid relief pitching not enough for Legion

Despite a long home run by Alex Pohlen that bounced off the bleachers in the outfield, and five innings of nine-strikeout pitching by Preston Nuy, the Minneota American Legion couldn’t overcome a 5-0 deficit after two innings, and lost to Montevideo, 5-2 Tuesday night.
Starting pitcher Jacob Hennen couldn’t survive past the second inning. He was charged for all five runs.
But when Preston Nuy entered the game, the door swung shut on Montevideo, they got just one more hit, three walks and struck out nine times against pitcher who graduated last year from Minneota but was eligible for one more season on the American Legion team.
The only trouble Nuy was in all night was the fourth when he walked Jackson Snell and gave up his only hit to Noah Buseman.
But he struck out John Van Ravingswaay to end the thret and got the help of a double play in the fifth turned by Brant Buysse at second, to first baseman Austin Sorensen.
It wasn’t that Minneota didn’t have its chances. Pohlen’s home run to lead off the fourth gave them hope. But Montevideo starter Max Carruth wiggled out of runners on first and third jam with one out in the fifth. Reliever VanRavingswaay stopped Minneota with Landon Abraham on third and one out in the sixth, then gave up a run in the seventh, but struck out Pohlen with two men on base to end the game.
Minneota got just six hits, two by Pohlen, and stranded eight runners.
They play at 7 p.m. Thursday at home against Granite Falls.
