Nolan Boerboom scored 21 points with five rebounds to lead Minneota.

Streak comes crashing down

•Thomas Hennen issues public apology for action that caused suspensions

With three of their highest-scoring and rebounding leaders sitting out the game with a disciplinary suspension, Minneota dropped it’s first boys’ game of the year, 57-55 to the Yellow Medicine Sting at Granite Falls. It was The Sting’s second win of the year.
Suspended for the game were Thomas Hennen, Jacob Hennen and Logan Sussner.

A Public Apology from Thomas Hennen

Thomas Hennen, Minneota senior, issued an apology he wanted printed and filed with the Minneota Mascot.
He said:
"In our varsity boys basketball game against MACCRAY on Jan. 31 in Clara City, I took it upon myself to violate a Minnesota State High School League rule by shooting free throws on two separate occasions when it was a teammate that had been fouled and should have gone to the free-throw line.

As a result of my actions, I was suspended for two games while each of those two teammates received a one-game suspension. I whole-heartedly accept the penalty given to me by my administrators.

In the heat of the game, my competitiveness emerged and I failed to think about the repercussions of my actions at that time.

I would like to apologize to those two teammates, as well as to the rest of my team and coaches, the fans, the school, and the community for my actions.

I would also like to apologize to the MACCRAY players, coaches and fans; and also to the Minnesota State High School League.

I know moving forward that I have learned from my inexcusable actions, and that it will never happen again."

As a result of the suspensions, Minneota had to play without three starters and still led 54-53 with time running out.
But Yellow Medicine East got buckets to win and break the 19-game winning streak of the state’s No. 1-ranked team.
Minneota plays Monday, February 11 at Adrian and early word is Sussner and Jacob Hennen will be back on the court but Thomas Hennen will sit out one more game.
Stepping up in the absence of the three starters were a pair of juniors, Nolan Boerboom and Alex Salzer. Boerboom scored 21 points, including three of seven from three-point range and six of seven from the free throw line.
Saltzer hit for 20 points and was five of seven at the free throw line.
Without Sussner, the team’s leading rebound, plus the next two, the Hennen’s, Minneota got just 16 rebounds. Boerboom had five and Saltzer two.
Yellow Medicine East relied almost solely on senior Bennett Knapper, who sank three of nine three-pointers, a phenomenal 16 of 16 free throws and a total of 33 points.
No other Sting scored in double figures.
Minneota set to play a doubleheader at Cottonwood against Lakeview, with the boys playing at 6 p.m.
However, both the Adrian and Lakeview games are highly dependent on the weather.
