Lydia Sussner scoring two of her 30 points.

Sussner 30, Abby Hennen 25 in win

Rust. It attatches itself to basketball teams as well as  old cars.

It needs to be shaken off and the car fixed before it has that glow again.

Such was the Minneota Viking girls Thursday night. They've played just one other game since December 20 and in that game the starters played about half a game.

After leading 36-24 at the half, the Vikings scraped off the rust and scored 49 points in the second half to take an 85-51 win over Central Minnesota Christian.

"We did a lot of good things that first half — but we couldn't finish," said Coach Chad Johnston.

Speak of finishing — Lydia Sussner did just that with 30 points and Abby Hennen poured in 25.

Minneota didn't hit a three-pointer in the first half and didn't do so until Abby Hennen finally hit at 14:45 of the second half.

Coach Chad Johnston didn't feel it was as much the "rust" as it was inability to, "Recognize the weaknesses of their zone."

While Sussner had 18 first-half points, many of them came off steals, fast breaks and generally the transition game,

It wasn't until Miinneota began getting the ball inside to Sussner that the oustide shooting lanes opened up.

Minneota tried to stop the shootng of Molly Mulder and Colette Duininck. But the two freshman kept plopping the ball in the basket and ended with 15 and 19 points.

"They're a couple of nice players and they're good to be a good team," said Coach Johnston.

Morgan Kockelman dished off six assists and Lizzy Gillingham had four as they got the ball inside for buckets.

But the most decisive statistics were the 34 turnovers by the Bluejays that led to 26 steals, egiht by Abby Hennen, seven by Sussner and four more by Natalee Rolbiecki.

Minneota's smothering defense the second half, mostly a two-one-two variety, clogged up the court and caused much of the damage.

"In the first half shots weren't going in. If those things are not going in, the next thing is to go inside. The second half we looked to Lydia more," said the coach.

One alarming statistic was the lack of rebounding by the Vikings. They had just 22 with Sussner and Abby Hennen leading with five each. But Bluejay junior Elli Stoel grabbed nine and led her team to 26 rebounds.

"We did the same thing against them last year. We played a poor first half and came back for a good second half," the coach said.

Minneota plays at Dawson-Boyd tonight in another Camden Conference game.. They will take a 10-0 season record and No. 1-ranking in Class A into that game.
