Minneota players (left to right) Lizzy Gillingham, Abby Hennen, Morgan Kockelman and Morgan Hennen exploded with joy when Lydia Sussner sank the winning free throw to beat Maranatha Saturday.

Vikings edge Academy in physical contest

In what has been labled, "One of the roughest games imaginable," by a local fan, the Minneota Vikings used a free throw by Lydia Sussner with half a second left in the game to beat Maranatha Academy Saturday, 63-62.

Sussner’s free throw at the last second helped the Vikings take down the Mustangs, who had battled back from a 34-27 halftime deficit to Minneota.

One fan, who also got to see the Minnesota Wild play last weekend said, "It was rougher than the Wild game."

With bodies flying all over the play, the Division 2A Maranatha Academy squad committed 23 fouls, sending the Vikings to the free throw line 23 times. They converted 15 of them for 65 percent — to just seven of 13 for the Crusaders. And that turned out to be the difference in the game.

Sussner finished the game with 32 points, including eight of nine from the free throw line. And it was Sussner, with 21 rebounds, who led the Vikings to a 53-34 rebound margin over the host team.

Neither team was particularly strong from the outside with seven three-pointers scored all night. But with elbows high and bodies flyin' through the air, it got to be a rough affair.

Maranatha standout Jaclyn Jarnot tossed in 23 points; Kylie Post 12 and Macy Smith  11 for the Crusaders. But Vikings  Morgan Hennen and Lizzy Gillingham each added 11 and Abby Hennen scored eight.

The first half was nip-and-tuck until Minneota put on a spurt of eight-straight points and took a nine-point, 23-14 lead. But Jarot and her plas closed the margin to 29-27 before a final five to zero run gave the Vikings the seven-point lead at the half.

The second half was a whirl-wind of exchanging leads and ties.

It was tied at 45; then at 52; 57; 59 and finally at 62.

Maranatha got the lead back at 52-51 for the first time since early in the game and they led, 62-61.

But the Vikings would rally and Sussner's free throw set up an explosion of Minneota players, who have now defeated Maranatha the last two seasons.
