Vikings SECOND at state
Minneota's run for a state title fell short when defending champion Mayer Lutheran turned back the Vikints, 3-0 to capture their second straight crown.
The final scores were 25-19; 25-16 and 25-13.
Mayer Lutheran led the entire way, including a 7-0 lead in the second game before the Vikings could get on the board.
"They are a great team," said Minneota Coach Hayley Fruin. "They're state champs for a reason," she added.
Despite the loss, the coach said, "We had a lot of fire and a lot of heart."
She added, "Even when we were down 24-13, you wouldn't know it. They were not giving up on any ball."
But Mayer Lutheran's balanced scoring, led by Madi Beck's 17 kills and Sophia Heuer's 10 was too much for the Vikings.
But the key was blocking. The Crusaders had 18 block attempts, scored three points on blocks and turned back every Minneota hitting at the net.
The Vikings did get 13 kills from Lydia Sussner and nine from Lizzy Gillingham.
The Vikings ended the season with a 29-6 record and Mayer Lutheran 32-2.
